Hammerstein/Kern, Fats Waller and Erik Satie might all be names you'd cite as being the opposite sound of Yusef Lateef's contemplative grooves and expert melding of jazz with a more exotic Eastern influence, but on 1965's Psychicemotus he tackles tunes from all three, with Satie's First Gymnopedie a surprisingly beautiful fit. A multi-instrumentalist whose first weapons of choice were sax and flute, Lateef here employs a bamboo flute to beautiful effect, most notably on Bamboo Flute Blues - a standout. - Flying Out
This excellent 1965 album from the always versatile Lateef runs the gamut musically, from the Coltrane influenced Semi-Octo to soulful reads of standards from Hammerstein/Kern, Fats Waller and Erik Satie, and a beautifully rendered original Bamboo Flute Blues.
Verve By Request Series features 180-gram vinyl, pressed at Third Man in Detroit.
