You've seen Flying Out co-owner Sophie Burbery behind our counter, and in plenty of our socials, but what you might not have known is that she's been quietly working away on an exquisite set of ambient tunes, which today finally get unveiled as a full album - Kōwhai. This all instrumental soundscape consists of five contemplative works, which Sophie explains "traverse the anatomy and physiology of the kōwhai tree". On top of that, it's just pretty damn blissful listening. - Flying Out
An electronic, instrumental, ambient soundscape, ‘Kōwhai’ is comprised of five musical pieces that traverse the anatomy & physiology of the kōwhai tree. An album based on science, nature, technology and sound - with a want to bring us back to the environment we live in.
The kōwhai symbolises new beginnings, the flowers represent the energy of change and transformation, spiritual growth and healing. Hope, joy, and optimism. Moving through the aka (roots), tātā (stem), rau (leaves), puāwai (flower) and taiao (environment), ‘Kōwhai’ enables us to think about the plant, the environment, and their connection to the world.
