The release of Siamese Dream in July 1993 is one of the landmark moments in modern music. Rock had been re-formed in the early part of the decade after a period of mid-life crisis during the 80s, and a kaleidoscope of new styles emerged - from the neo-punk of the Seattle Grunge scene to Trent Reznor's electronic-tinged industrial sound.
With Siamese Dream, Smashing Pumpkins managed to assimilate a plethora of these different sensibilities into a single, arching vision of alternative rock; they included a little of everything into the albums ambitious sweep, with many commentators drawing a comparison between the Pumpkins and the grand vision of 70s prog groups.
Inside the Dream Machine comes from the Siamese Dream tour, and a concert at Bing Crosby Hall in the Del Mar Fairgrounds, California on the 26th of October 1993.
The band perform most of the album, including a sparkling version of Disarm , but with a stripped-back and heavy live arrangement that is a fascinating contrast to the deliberate and textured production of the studio recording. With the best of Gish also featured in the set list, Inside the Dream Machine , broadcast on the Westwood One radio network, is the quintessential record of Smashing Pumpkins at the zenith of their career, a must for both fans of the group and those with an interest in the energy and creativity of the 90s alternative scene.
