For Mac, the whirlwind had begun back in 2014 when, aged 23, she'd been shot into the spotlight by winning Triple J's 'Unearthed Artist of the Year' title. Debut 2017 album Low Blows reached #2 in the Australian charts, and, by the time of 2019 follow-up LP Hope, the singer had racked up a bunch of ARIA nominations (the Aussie equivalent of the BRITs or GRAMMYs), a track feature on HBO's 'Girls' and a US tour supporting D'Angelo, which she still today describes as a "life highlight".

Objectively, the singer's career was a success, but internally there were still a host of hurdles to overcome. By the beginning of 2020, all of those personal niggles and professional doubts had come to a head. With a third album recorded and primed for imminent release, Mac had what she now describes as "a bit of a meltdown". She scrapped its lead single two weeks before release, and with it the rest of the body of work - a bold move towards a creative process without compromise.

Needing some space to regain perspective, Meg moved out to the countryside. And if an impromptu solo relocation, leaving everything she knew behind for a remote village in New South Wales, could have proven a disaster (you know what they say about running away from your problems…), then thankfully the sojourn proved just the switch up that the singer needed.

And from then, the vision of what would become Matter of Time began to snowball. She also started to answer the question she has had for years for years - of how to truly be satisfied and to make a record that flourishes without compromise. On Matter of Time, she's finally there.
