There's not much we'd be more excited about than announcing a brand new album from Marlon Williams (Kāi Tahu, Ngāi Tai), and with the huge news that Te Whare Tīwekaweka is coming, we're positively buzzing! Williams' fourth solo album is his first to be written in Māori, with brand new single Aua Atu Rā giving us a taste of the magic we're in for. Recorded alongside regular co-producer Mark "Merk" Perkins, and his road-tested band The Yarra Benders, Te Whare Tīwekaweka also features collaborations with Lorde and Williams' friend and fellow Lyttelton dweller KOMMI, who also helped him navigate his Māori language journey. With the album's process documented in upcoming film Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua - Two Worlds, it's going to be a big year for Marlon fans. - Flying Out
The making of the album was captured in the documentary Marlon Williams: Ngā Ao E Rua - Two Worlds directed by Ursula Grace. Marlon wanted to share his journey in the hope others might benefit. It’s the same impulse that drives his songwriting. “I hope that music may do the mahi (work) that conversation cannot, and that it may broaden and deepen our sense of interconnectedness,” he says. By expanding his output into Māori, Marlon has widened the portal through which that connection might happen. Te Whare Tīwekaweka, he says, has given him “a bigger playground”.
