Some thirty odd years ago in 1993, Johnny Cash found himself at a crossroads in his long and varied career. He would shortly go on to record his legendary final American Recordings albums with Rick Rubin, but before doing so he recorded an album's worth of demos in Nashville. The demos were all original compositions by Cash himself, and would lay untouched for decades until his son John Carter Cash rediscovered them and knew he had to do something special with them. Cash Jr put together a band of Johnny's nearest and dearest, fleshing out the demos into fully formed songs that sounded the way Johnny would have wanted them. Songwriter may well be the very final word from a legend. - Flying Out

Shortly before his career resurrection with Rick Rubin in the mid-Nineties with his American series, Johnny Cash recorded an album’s worth of songs in 1993 that never saw the light of day. Those eleven songs now form Songwriter, updated and burnished by the great man's son John Carter Cash and producer David Ferguson.
