6 Pieces of Silver

Vinyl LP

Horace Silver is the longest-serving artist on Blue Note in the label's history. The legendary pianist and composer recorded his first Blue Note session, Horace Silver Trio, in 1952, and his session for Silver 'N Strings Play The Music of the Spheres was the very last recording date before the label was mothballed in 1979.In the meantime, Silver recorded some of the best-loved albums in the Blue Note catalog, traversing bebop, hard bop, soul jazz, and forging his own path into the fusion movement of the 1970s. With his album from 1956, 6 Pieces of Silver, Silver struck gold with an outstanding hard bop ensemble that introduced one of his greatest compositions, Señor Blues. This indelible theme is the one of Silver's five excellent original tracks (plus the standard For Heaven's Sake) performed by an excellent quintet including Donald Byrd on trumpet, Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Doug Watkins on bass and Louis Hayes on drums. Other highlights of the album include the hard swing of Cool Eyes, the stunning ballad Shirl, the complex rhythm of Camouflage and the haunting Latin rhythm of Enchantment. This Blue Note Classic Vinyl edition is fully analog, mastered by Kevin Gray from the original tapes, and pressed on 180g vinyl at Optimal.
