A year after releasing Positive Rising: Part 1, DZ Deathrays are writing the closing chapter of their sprawling rock saga. With a moodier bent than its predecessor, Positive Rising: Part 2 draws the outline of an apocalyptic scene, one that sees the band – Shane Parsons, Simon Ridley, and Lachlan Ewbank – stepping outside of themselves, seeking out new perspectives and surveying the world from above. From up there, they don't always like what they see.

After decamping to Los Angeles to record Part 1, the band returned home – along with producer Miro Mackie – to record Part 2 in late 2019, leading to a tonal shift between the albums. They're nonetheless designed to be treated as two halves of a whole, from the songs – which the band hopes will be played from beginning to end – to the artwork. "If you put those two album pictures together, it shows a full day. It's like a yin and yang, showing the full spectrum."

The rustbucket on the cover of Part 1 wasn't a write-off, left to melt under the sun; its headlights beam out into the dark on the Part 2 artwork, illuminating glowing apparitions of the band. Spot fires pepper the desert landscape and a trail of black smoke suggests the recent crash-landing of something that's burrowed out of sight. The suited-up band members in the first photograph aren't just taking a stroll; they're walking away from something. And it's something we've all tried – passively or passionately – to escape at one point.
