Hot on the heels of instant favourite new tune Metal, The Beths have released a stonking new single called No Joy, and dropped the beautiful bombshell that their brand new album will be here at the end of August. Straight Line Was A Lie sees our heroes having signed up with new label ANTI- (MJ Lenderman, Waxahatchee), with a clearly laid path to superstardom on their own terms ahead. Following an intensive writing period that included a daily typewriter routine, a retreat to L.A., and some intensive soul searching, The Beths are set to dish up what the label are calling "the most sharply observant, truthful, and poetic Beths project to date". To say we can't wait is an understatement... we're turning blue from holding our breath - help! - Flying Out
Following the success of Expert In A Dying Field, The Beths collected the coveted Te Tino Pukaemi o te Tau | Album of the Year and Te Tino Kāhui Manu Taki o te Tau | Best Group at the 2024 Aotearoa Music Awards. The new album was written in Los Angeles and recorded in The Beths' studio in Auckland — a space where the band can create their signature sound. When writing Straight Line Was A Lie, Elizabeth Stokes and Jonathan Pearce broke down their typical writing process. Stokes’ intentional deconstruction and rebuilding of her songwriting process has resulted in a complete renewal. Her writing has achieved startling new depths of insight and vulnerability, making Straight Line Was A Lie The Beths most sharply observant, poetic and truthful release to date.
