Alternative rock, or abbreviated to just simply alternative, first came to present in the early '70s as independent underground music and gradually developed into the '90s as a reaction to the mainstream pop music from that era. Alternative music was represented by bands who were signed to independent labels, but major labels also picked up on the trend, which led to commercial success in the international music charts.
