Following internal changes that saw Lynn Mabry depart, Dawn Silva remained at the helm as George Clinton brought in P-Funk vocalists Jeanette McGruder and Sheila Horne, forming a formidable three-part front line. Backed by key members of the Parliament-Funkadelic family – including Bernie Worrell, Bootsy Collins and Garry Shider – the group expanded the scope of their debut into something bolder and more self-assured.

Released in 1979, Never Buy Texas From A Cowboy finds The Brides of Funkenstein in full command. The sprawling, 15-minute title track dominates, a deep-grooving showcase for both the band’s musical firepower and the trio’s vocal chemistry. Elsewhere, ‘Party Up In Here’ and ‘Smoke Signals’ bring punch and swagger, while ‘Mother May I?’ and the smooth ‘Didn’t Mean To Fall In Love’ reveal a softer, melodic touch.

Though it didn’t produce a breakout single, the album matched the success of its predecessor and has since earned recognition as a cornerstone of the P-Funk catalogue.
