Terror's Horns

Mehdi Ameziane and Solange Gularte, a.k.a. Natural Snow Buildings, grapple with Deliverance-esque themes in Terror's Horns, their 1st release for Ba Da Bing!. Adorned with artwork depicting some mask-wearing, gun-toting backwoods inbreds framed against a forest fire, and sporting track titles such as People In The Hills and King in Yellow, the album takes shape as a doom-laden fantasy folk/horror narrative nodding to the arcane craft of Nico as much as the soundtracks of Morricone or Kreng and the atmospheres of classic Stephen King horrors.

OK, there are no duelling banjos in earshot, but the air is thick with grotesque drone apparitions and petrified folk themes, layering discordant fiddles, plangent guitar and cranky, crashing drums connoting secret rites and sacrifice or burnt orange horizons and flaming torches in the pitch darkness. It's also notably concise in its execution and scope, tending to cue-like instrumental brevity for the most part, but also featuring a trio of haunting songs making poignant use of Solange's vocals, at best in the foggy nine minutes of King In Yellow and 'marish chamber folk of Sun Tower. A ripe selection for the incoming autumnal months…
