We all know what comes to mind when we think of The Dunedin Sound, but it's well worth remembering that Dunedin has had many sounds over the decades. Case in point, this wonderful collection from The Perfect Garden! Around for a cruelly brief moment, the band cited "Jesus and Mary Chain, The Primitives, The Shop Assistants and Loop" as influences, these songs dish up all the " jangle, drone rock and indie" you could hope for. We're loving this Dunedin sound! - Flying Out

The Perfect Garden formed in 1988 in Dunedin by Aaron, Karen, Kieron Martin and Shane. Inspired by the British indie music scene, we were influenced by the look and the sound of the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Primitives, the Shop Assistants and Loop. Our ethos was partly in doing something different to what was happening in Dunedin at the time and to move away from the Flying Nun scene. We wore our leather trousers and polo necks with pride, and looked outwards towards England, C86, Sarah Records and Primal Scream, to combine jangle, drone rock and indie. The band’s best memories are of supporting the Bats and the 3Ds, Dolphin in Christchurch and playing a sold out show at Sammy’s in Dunedin. There was a sense of idealism, a deftness of touch, which felt rewarded by those wonderful times in the practice room when everything came together and a new song started to form. At the time we just played how we wanted to play and in the process we found our own voice, our own sound. By mid-1990 it was all over as band members dispersed and the scene changed, but for 18 magical months we lived our own indie pop dream…'
