The trajectory of Pōneke expat Sarah Mary Chadwick's song writing career has been one of the more fascinating to follow. From the ruthless rock of Batrider to an album recorded on a civic pipe organ, you really do never know what's coming next. Take Me Out To a Bar / What Am I, Gatsby? finds our hero continuing her run with the amazing Kill Rock Stars label, dishing up another impossibly beautiful and starkly smart set of songs that could only have come from one magic mind. - Flying Out
Take Me Out To a Bar / What Am I, Gatsby? marks a deliberate pivot. The album’s open, introductory chords evoke seem fit to score a scene in a Michael Haneke movie in which some stern German woman stomps down a whitewashed hallway. By the time that Chadwick’s crackly soprano joins in, it figures almost as a kind of intrusion upon what had been, up until that point, a pure mood. “You don’t have to listen to all the lyrics,” she attests.
