While nothing could ever quite match the perfection of Violent Femmes' self-titled debut, its sequel Hallowed Ground did a damned fine job of giving it a go. Featuring fan favourites like Country Death Song and Jesus Walking On The Water, the album was written at the same time as its predecessor, but still somehow acts as a stylistic departure with its gothic Americana slant, and earnest religious leanings mixed with confessional debauchery. Released in line with its 40th anniversary; Hallowed Ground is the 1984 follow up to the Violent Femmes legendary self-titled debut album. Similar to the first album, all of the songs were written by lead singer Gordon Gano while still in high school. The band’s sophomore title, however, pushed the band in new directions and made sure they did not rest on their laurels – featuring fan favorites (and live staples) Country Death Song, Jesus Walking on the Water, I Hear The Rain, Black Girls and Never Tell.
