Journey In Satchidananda

Vinyl LP

Three years after the death of John Coltrane, his widow released this astonishing LP that pushed back the boundaries of jazz and beyond, with its modal improvisation, impassioned exploration of blues and its groundbreaking use of African roots rhythms. Coltrane shows herself to be a brilliantly inventive pianist and harp player, but it's the instinctive interplay with the other musicians that lifts it out of the grooves and gives it such a spiritual depth and rarefied sense of presence. Part inspired by Indian religious teacher Swami Satchidananda and part tribute to John Coltrane, it liberally references both something about John Coltrane uses some of her husbands themes - though the full majesty is best reflected on the live track Isis and Osiris, highlighted by Vishnu Wood's oud.
