“I haven’t heard a new band so magical in years” feels like the right place to start. @ (pronounced “At”) , made up of Philadelphia guitarist Victoria Rose and Baltimore producer Stone Filipczak, create folk-pop that feels slightly unreal; blending acoustic guitar, piano and flute with digital textures. Originally released in 2021 and now reissued by Carpark, the duo's debut full-length, Mind Palace Music, offers a tidy half hour of warm, off-kilter imperfection. Keep an eye on these two. - Flying Out
With an affinity for blending digital with analog elements, @ describe Mind Palace Music as “hyperfolk,” though the record never feels self-indulgent. Rose and Filipczak are just as inspired by the thoughtful delicacy of ambient pioneers like Laurie Spiegel as they are by the timeless quality of singer-songwriters like Vashti Bunyan. You can feel the influence of those ‘70s folk greats while also evoking the tender drone and foolproof melodies of Elliott Smith, Alex G, or Sparklehorse.
