Brightest Days is the first new album from Blackman in eight years, written during a period of time spent hiding out on the East Cape and on his return to Wellington. It contains the single By the River which is accompanied by a beautifully shot video directed by Hamish Waterhouse with cinematography by Bill Bycroft. By the River was described by High Clouds Mag as a song that “plays like a perfectly captured moment of serenity and peace, a calm and blissful sigh of contentment to be at a place that’s filled with nostalgia”.

The record was made in his typical raw DIY style by first time recording and mixing engineer Brooke Singer (French for Rabbits) in her Brooklyn apartment in Wellington. It was mastered by Al Green (Groeni). The LP includes additional instrumentation and vocals from Singer, and Lucy Botting (Girl Boss). Blackman’s last full length record, 2011’s ‘Everyone Needs Something To Hold On To’, assumed the bare, emotional Pacific Northwest sound. The new record is emotionally direct and imbued with weighty detail reflecting on past relationships.

FFO: Mt Eerie, Sun Kill Moon, Aldous Harding and Chris Knox.
