Trotting in on the heels of their 2003 debut Horsepower, The Phoenix Foundation's second album Pegasus saw the band shift from mellow indie-rock to more cinematic soundscapes that incorporated a whole plethora of sounds, including unconventional instruments like the theremin, banjo and electric violin.

The almost-sinister sounding album has been described as a watershed moment by Samuel Flynn Scott, who said it was “the point where people outside of us, DJs, music journos and our friends started listening". Pegasus was recorded and mixed by Lee Prebble at The Surgery in Wellington over 2004-2005, before heading over to Sydney for mastering by Don Bartley. Following its release the album found itself charting in the Top 10 and deservedly going gold.
