On Weighing of the Heart, Iqbal largely eschews the syrup-thick beat-pop she made under her former moniker for intense, impassioned post-punk clearly informed by New Order and Slowdive. Her vocals often come heavy with reverb, a production choice that makes it seem like she’s presiding over the tracks while keeping them firmly under her control. A notable addition to the sound is the guitar, which she’s been increasingly incorporating into her live shows. Often fed through heavy effects, it provides a counterbalance to the soft-focus, hazy aura of the record. Charting the waters where dance music and pop meet, she melds moody, propulsive basslines with shimmering synth atmospheres.
The album was mixed by Stephen Sedgwick, who works closely with Damon Albarn and who mixed the most recent Gorillaz album Humanz.
On her debut LP, British producer Nabihah Iqbal—fka Throwing Shade—has a rare touch with inky new wave synths and drum machines, emerging as a songwriter of impressive emotional heft.

a thoughtful, immersive debut
nostalgic, sweet pop and pristine beats
Discarding the ambiguity of former moniker Throwing Shade, London alt-pop artist Nabihah Iqbal’s first full-length release deals in thoughtful, expansive soundscapes. With airy, propulsive percussion, languid curls of grungey guitar, 1980s-sheen synths and hazy vocals. An album that improves with each listen, with an accomplished, ornate warmth.
