"A solo album from the voice and guitar of defunct Auckland art-popsters Superette. Mulcahy takes a DIY approach, mixing electronics and acoustic guitar to propel his bittersweet songs.

Sometimes its intimate setting echoes the languor of the early days of his other previous band, JPS Experience, and could be taken as a thoughtful flip side to the sunny massed-guitar epics of the Stereo Bus led by former bandmate Dave Yetton.

Oddy Knocky starts off with the electro-pop clatter of Control Freak (suffering lashings of vocoder) and Don't You Hate the 70s (its grumbling topped later by the clumsy Ban Ban Ban).

The second half has a couple of excursions into band-sized dronerock, but the highlights are the acoustic-plus tracks. Among those, the likes of Crazy and Ticking Inside You resemble the Smashing Pumpkins' prettier, melancholy moments; Leo the Baby and Wrapped in Your Arms are Twilight Zone country; and Kissed Away and Avalanche are dark pop gems. It may be too long in its 15 tracks to be cohesive, but at its minimal best Oddy Knocky still enchants."
