Forever Dolphin Love (Reissue)
Debut solo album from the front man / singer / songwriter / guitarist of obscure legendary New Zealand band, Connan and the Mockasins. Forever Dolphin Love shifted its creation between East Sussex, London, and a haunted house somewhere in Wellington, New Zealand and was the first album on Erol Alkan's Phantasy label. The album falls somewhere between fantasy and reality, innocence and wisdom, pop music and an art form as yet unnamed. It introduces the listener to the amazing world of Connan Mockasin - from cats with larger-than-life personalities, unicorns in uniform, to alter egos such as don dicaprio.
The true cosmonaut of inner space Connan Mockasin with a fantastic 11 track set. The album explores different regions of his galaxy, not just soul but a liquefied brew of blues, funk, ambient and folk with pronounced Oriental and Gallic timbres, all laced with an uncanny air of bliss. Caramel has hints of Scritti Politti's exquisitely stitched soul, or of Prince - if the Minneapolis legend had spent time in Canterbury, the learned epicentre of South East England's progressive psychedelia during the late '60s and early '70s, where the likes of Syd Barrett and Kevin Ayers began their own musical journeys.
Nothing is ever straightforward with Connan Mockasin, and nothing should ever be straightforward with Monnan Cockasin. This riddled rule has never resonated more than on Jassbusters, Mockasin’s third album and first in five years. An unclassifiable, unconventional album that neither picks up from nor abandons the modes of 2013’s widely-embraced Caramel or its 2010 predecessor Forever Dolphin Love, Jassbusters foreshadows a five-part melodrama titled Bostyn 'n Dobsyn, directed by and starring Mockasin. Jassbusters soundtracks the unpredictable narrative of the television series in eclectic, electric ways.
