Ninja Tune sub-label Counter Records (home to Maribou State,ODESZA and Submotion Orchestra) release the debut album from Chrome Sparks (aka Jeremy Malvin). Anyone who dug the loping, Brainfeeder-style hip-hop that characterised Chrome Sparks’ previous drops on Future Classic (Chet Faker, Flume) will be pleased to know that this eponymous record represents an evolution rather than a revolution for the artist’s sound. The MPC skullduggery and warm keys are still present and correct on entries like Sugar and All or Nothing, both of which are reminiscent of TOKiMONSTA. However, there is a shiny hip-house sound to several of the tracks here that gives Chrome Sparks a pleasing brightness.

Chrome Sparks knows how to make his tracks shine. His album boasts a sparkling sound: a euphony of hip-hop, house and bright-beaming synthwork. The record itself features collaborations with Australian duo Kllo (Ghostly), Body Language’s Angelica Bess (who’s previously collaborated with Machinedrum).
