Kelela’s new avatar draws on her earliest experiences writing in DIY spaces, where experimentation and imperfection were part of the process. Returning to that mindset, she approaches these songs with intent but leaves room for spontaneity, allowing ideas to unfold without overworking them. The result moves between tenderness and confrontation, with expressions of love and devotion sitting alongside flashes of anger. Rather than aiming for polish, the record leans into immediacy, capturing a sense of release that runs through the material. It’s a confident extension of her voice, opening another angle on her sound while staying rooted in the instincts that shaped it.
