In this weekly column Ben Howe of Flying Nun/Arch Hill/Flying Out finds some new tracks and updates the weekly Hellzapoppin' Spotify playlist. Here is the first new music and listening update from me for 2016. New music - from spacey soundtracks to rambling angular alt/funk.
First up this video by Carnivorous Plan Society - for Chambers & Cathedrals - is a stop motion video made by band leader Finn Scholes. Like a lot of the album, this track is a bit space jazz 60s lounge soundtrack like - think early Morricone or instrumental Gainsbourg.
The latest track/video by Wellington artist Womb is pretty cool in a 4AD floaty etherial kind of way, a little bit Beach House all organs, sparse drum machines and verbed out vocals. Womb recently released an EP via the Sonorous Circle label also from Wellington
This new track from Trust Punks is pretty cool and a bit of a departure for them, more Slint or even Fugazi it rambles along managing to sound both loose and tight at the same time. Rugged, spoken wordy and probably my favourite thing they have done so far.
Roy Irwin has just dropped a whole album called S.O.D.A - you can get it over on bandcamp. Apparently there is vinyl via the label 1:12 and also a cassette via Danger Collective. This is the opening track, all recorded by Roy and there are some nice pop tunes.
This is a pretty great live video of the band Deradoorian. I'd been liking this track for a while and put it on my Spotify playlist, though I didn't know anything about the band. Anyway, turns out the singer Angel Deradoorian formerly of Dirty Projectors, and they are actually coming to New Zealand in April.
Below is my latest/updated Spotify Playlist - as per usual often the new additions end up down the bottom.
