In this weekly column Ben Howe of Flying Nun/Arch Hill/Flying Out finds some new tracks and updates the weekly Hellzapoppin' Spotify playlist. To keep up with what we are playing in the office you can also check out and follow Flying Nun, Flying Out, The Arrivals Lounge, and Matthew's Bored At Work playlists
Encouragement is a band featuring Adam Ladley and Holly Beals formerly of Family Cactus and James Duncan formerly of SJD, Dimmer, his own stuff and lots of other stuff. They have just released great album of songs with a very current slightly electronic-pop sort of vibe, nicely produced. As far as I know there are no plans to do any further shows - so seems like a fairly low key release.
Also playing Psych Fest are Purple Pilgrims - a mysterious duo who apparently live somewhere in the back blocks of the Coromandel hills. They put out a super spacey verbed out EP a few years back, got mentioned in Pitchfork and other blogs and do cool synchronised hand movements in this live video.
Everyone around the Flying Out office/shop is liking these sunny lo-fi nicely rambling tunes by Auckland person/band Wormstar. Don't fear the 90s and Jangle on. The whole album is up on band camp. Looking forward to seeing them at The Others Way this Thursday.
This new track by Lapis, called Alex, is one of many from the local electronic experimental label Cosmic Compositions...their soundcloud page is worth a look/listen.
I have just updated my Spotify playlist here including a few acts playing the Psych Fest like the above Purple Pilgrims, Death in the Maiden, Bespin, a bit (more) Krautrock, a couple of newer bands and other stuff I've recently listened to. Follow the playlist to keep updated.
