In this weekly column Ben Howe of Flying Nun/Arch Hill/Flying Out finds some new tracks and updates the weekly Hellzapoppin' Spotify playlist. Featuring Aporia, Mermaidens, Sleepers Union and Diiv.
If you didn't hear it already, the earlier track First Nail in the Coffin is also good.
Wellington band Mermaidens have a new single called Seed from a forthcoming EP/album. Various members of the band have been overseas over the last little while, but sounds like they are back soon and have some things in the works.
Sleepers Union, featuring Simon MacLaren (Love's Ugly Children, Subliminals) Francis Hunt (many bands! Stereobus etc) Mark Anderson and others, dropped a brand new album slightly unexpectedly. But it is a good surprise, packed with really good highly melodic fuzzy tunes. Here is the opening track which is also the single, but there are lots of other good ones. Their last album was 2003 so it has been a while between drinks.
Diiv have a new track out from their forthcoming album, out in February next year on Captured Tracks. They are also playing Laneway and recently had their debut album repressed on vinyl (we have it at Flying Out!)
Finally, this new Soccer Practice video and song is cool
Below is my new Hellzappopin' Spotify playlist which I intend to update about once a week. No particular theme or flow but just tracks I find and like some old and others new. Feel free to share and follow!
