YEAR IN REVIEW: FISHRIDER RECORDS

Flying Out Fishrider Records

Fishrider RecordsIt's the end of the year, which means we get to write big lists to show off all the cool stuff that happened, this time round we take a look at all of Fishrider Records releases this year...

Before we begin, a brief word from the man riding the fish:
"This time last year I had no idea what Fishrider Records would be releasing in 2013. Or if it would even release anything, as 2012's unprecedented 4 release plus Opposite Sex UK (re)release schedule left me breathless, overwhelmed & financially & emotionally exhausted.

But just before Christmas last year I heard Trick Mammoth's "Baltimore" (demo). That put a smile on my face, a spring in my step and an idea in my head. It also saved my life. Or maybe Fishrider's life. I can't be sure where I end and Fishrider begins these days.  Along the way to helping Trick Mammoth's swoony flower cult pop debut 'Floristry' into life (and oh, what fun that's been) Fishrider also released a debut album by The Prophet Hens which impressed a lot of people - mostly overseas - who still like jangly Antipodean pop tunes.

Then there was a spontaneous decision mid-year to release the debut mini-album from Males. It is currently being played on college radio stations all over the US and Canada and well in the CMJ playlist Top 200 on debut, which is a good way to ring the bells for Christmas & keep Dunedin's Pop Underground on the world radar for another year. Trick Mammoth's 'Floristry' won't quite make the cut-off for a 2013 official release but its release early next year sets 2014 up for an early bloom.

Who knows what will happen next year? I don't."

The Prophet Hens - Popular People Do Popular People
(CD + DIGITAL)
FISHRIDER RECORDS - AUGUST

Hatched from Dunedin's dreamy but dark 21st century pop underground, The Prophet Hens bring a ghostly reminder of the decaying southern city's musical past, when bands crafted melodic, chiming jangle-pop in seedy bars.

“..perfectly encapsulates the big bold ambition of Dunedin music with the quiet drama of isolation on a South Pacific island: part Chills organ-drenched pop, part bedroom angst” -  Did Not Chart (UK)
MALES - RUN RUN RUN/MALES MALES MALES
(LP, CD + DIGITAL)
FISHRIDER RECORDS - NOVEMBER
Males are a guitar pop band from Dunedin, making insanely catchy short songs, crammed with melody, propulsive guitar, helium vocals & harmonies. It's helium-powered pop on a sugar diet, with serious themes. This debut mini-album collects together their first EP, a single & four brand new songs into one convenient bag of aural treats.

“...brightly summertime pop cramming a lot of melodic hooks and guitar momentum into economic songs”  - NZ Herald

FORTHCOMING RELEASE:
TRICK MAMMOTH - FLORISTRY
(LP, CD + DIGITAL)
FISHRIDER RECORDS - FEBRUARY
Trick Mammoth are a flower cult pop band from Dunedin. Fragile, lucid, but rough around the edges, their songs are unintentionally sincere and bashfully honest, performed with open arms and a soft indifference. Drawing mostly on film, literature and poetry, their music has a shy pretension buried under layers of simplicity. With comparisons ranging from Black Tambourine to The Carpenters, this youthful trio have crafted a sound saccharine sweet yet doused in death. Gorgeous dream-pop from the margins.
